Ed Harris, Senior Education Officer, Ministry of Defence

Ed has spent much of his career within senior Education leadership roles within local government in the United Kingdom. This has included being the lead officer for Education at a large unitary authority, with responsibility for 10 Infant schools, 40 primary, 20 Secondary and 9 Further Education Colleges.

He also spent several years working within the Scottish Education system as an LA officer, during the earlier phases of Curriculum for Excellence implementation.

With a background in ASN/SEND, Ed works closely with local authorities and government departments across the UK, to support the improvement of policy and practice for children from armed forces families.

Ed’s current role as the Senior Education Officer within the Ministry of Defence, involves the championing of positive educational outcomes for the 90,000 children of military personnel attending educational provision in the UK and overseas. Ed was responsible for the creation of the Ministry of Defence Local Authority Partnership (MODLAP) in England, which is a construct of senior LA education officers from those LA’s with the highest numbers of armed forces children.

Ed has been a member of the Scottish Armed Forces Education Support Group (SAFESG) since 2016.

As a part of his Senior Education role, Ed completes reviews of independent and state school provision in overseas locations. This seeks to identify any potential challenges cohorts of children may face in transitioning back to UK education systems.
