Thriving Lives in Early Years Launch Event
Posted in News
Earlier this week, the Thriving Lives in Early Years launch event brought together over 50 attendees from across the sector at The Studio, Birmingham, including early years practitioners, Local Authorities, charities, researchers and wider stakeholders, all united by a shared commitment to improving outcomes for Service children and families.
The event was warmly opened by Vice Lord Lieutenant Louise Bennett OBE, with welcome remarks from Clare Scherer MBE, CEO of the Naval Children's Charity, setting the tone for a collaborative and purposeful day.
Research Report
A key highlight of the morning was the official launch of the newly published research report, Enabling Young Children from Armed Forces Families to Thrive: Early Years Evidence, Practice and Policy. Led by Chris Pascal and Tony Bertram from CREC, the presentation explored the evidence base, emerging themes and practical recommendations for the sector. We are delighted that the research is now published online and available here.
Event Sessions
This was followed by an expert panel discussion chaired by SCiP Alliance Director Philip Dent, featuring:
- Debra Barton, Ministry of Defence, Early Years Specialist
- Judith Blair, Forces Children Scotland, Learning and Development Officer
- Rebecca Lovell, Naval Families Federation, Head of Policy and Deputy CEO
- Judith Chinnery, RAFAKidz, Quality Assurance Manager
Together they shared valuable perspectives on policy, practice and the support needed for Armed Forces families with young children.
Throughout the day, attendees took part in reflections, networking and practical workshop sessions focused on getting started with the toolkit and how it can be embedded in local settings and organisations.
Pioneer Programme
We were also pleased to highlight the opportunity for early years practitioners to join the new Pioneer Programme, offering a unique opportunity to influence the national toolkit’s design and delivery, helping to shape the resources and training that will be used across the UK. Pioneers will gain access to early learning, peer support and valuable insight, while also having the chance to showcase their practice through case studies and shared learning.

A sincere thank you to everyone who attended, contributed and supported the event, and to Armed Forces Covenant Trust for their generous funding and continued support.
